The department of Oral Anatomy and Physiology/Temporomandibular Joint Disease (TMD) Clinic, sprouted as Orthopedic Department in Dental School of Nanjing Central University in 1935. It was established by Professor Hua Chen. After liberation in 1949, it grew into Dental School of Fifth Military Medical University. In 1956, it moved to Xi’an, as one part of the department of Basic Oral Medicine, which was led by Professor Huiyun Wang. In 1979 and 1981, our department was authorized as the first batch master and doctoral degree subject respectively in China. In 1987, the TMD Clinic was established by Professor Huiyun Wang. In 1988, the department of Oral Anatomy and Physiology was established formally. From 1997, the chair of our department was Professor Meiqing Wang.
In the past, our department was one of the most advanced departments in the field of Oral Anatomy and Physiology in China. Professor Huiyun Wang was graduated from Dental School of Huaxi Medical University in 1945. In 1950s, she collected approximately 150,000 human teeth, and began the research on Chinese dental anatomy. Based on these results, two professional books——Dental Anatomy/Dental Anatomy and Physiology, and one professional article (The Measurement and Analysis of Chinese Teeth), were published. These materials were the most important references up to now. In 1960s, Professor Huiyun Wang took the lead in the research on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and occlusion in China. In 1964, she published the first article in this field in China——The Anatomical Observation of Temporomandibular Joint. In 1983, she published a review on Occlusion, which was the beginning of occlusal research in China. In 1989, the first symposium on occlusion was convened in Xi’an. In 1990, Professor Huiyun Wang published the professional book Occlusion.
In the middle of 1990s, led by Professor Zijun Liu who ever studied in Japan, our department carried out a serial of clinical research on the anatomy of TMJ disc, the electrophysiology of lateral pterygoid muscle, and the replacement of TMJ disc by occlusal splint. Later on, led by Professor Meiqing Wang, our department focused on occlusion research. In the past 20 years, funded by 11 NSFC projects, our department established successfully the animal model of TMJ osteoarthritis induced by abnormal occlusion, and suggested and proved that TMD can be induced by abnormal occlusion solely. In 2011, Professor Meiqing Wang was appointed as visiting professor of Tufts University in USA. As for teaching field, focusing on visualization teaching in Oral Anatomy and Physiology, our department made serial multimedia courseware and network course. Later on, our department set up the course of Plaster Teeth Carving firstly in China, and published professional textbook——The Art and Technology of Plaster Teeth Carving. Five years later, this textbook renamed as Plaster Teeth Carving Course, was published as national textbook in 2008. In 2009, our course——Oral Anatomy and Physiology, was approved as national excellent course. In 2012, Professor Meiqing Wang was elected as the chief editor of Oral Anatomy and Physiology (the seventh edition). Now, 3-5 postgraduate students will graduate from our department every year. In our TMD clinic, there are 9 chairs and 9 doctors. Our clinic mainly focuses on TMD, bruxism, occlusal disease and cervical vertebra disease. Up to now, more than 15,000 patients have been treated in our clinic, and all the electrical case records have been established.
